Dr. Uché Blackstock, an emergency medicine physician, author, and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, is helping healthcare organizations integrate equity into their leadership strategies and patient care. Inspired by her mother, Dr. Dale Gloria Blackstock, she has carried forward a legacy of community health advocacy from Brooklyn to the national stage. After over a decade in academic medicine, Dr. Blackstock founded Advancing Health Equity in 2019 to partner with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and nonprofits on translating equity goals into practice. Her bestselling memoir, Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine, traces systemic inequities in healthcare while highlighting the need for institutional change. Her work has included facilitating executive roundtables, leading communications strategies, and supporting national campaigns such as Advil’s initiative on pain inequity in Black patients, which has since been incorporated into medical education materials. Dr. Blackstock has been recognized with honors, including Harvard Humanist of the Year (2021) and the American Medical Women’s Association Presidential Award.
